Tools & Strategies

What is CPU?

In our world CPU stands for Cost Per Unit, and refers to the specific way in which clients are billed, which is a fixed unit-labor cost for finished goods produced.

It can also be used to refer to the general model nGROUP implements, where a third party is not only responsible for the provision of the labor within an area, but also the performance and bills based on a unit-labor cost. In this case, CPU is used interchangeably with Insourcing, and in some cases 4PL/3PL.

Visibility – nSite technology gives you visibility into operational performance.

Resources – nGROUP’s team of experienced operators and engineers frees you up to focus on your core business, and scale efficiently.

Risk – nGROUP’s model relieves your business of labor-related risks.

Why is Cost Per Unit better than traditional hourly labor?

In an hourly model, a staffing agency is compensated based on the number of hours they bill, so the economic incentive is to bill the maximum amount of hours. In a unit cost model nGROUP is paid for unit produced, so the incentive is to meet the customer's service levels in the most efficient way possible. Usually, the letter aligns much better with a business’s goals than the former.

What about quality and service levels?

nGROUP is accountable for cost through the CPU, but we typically have additional service level requirements written into our agreements that revolve around other KPI’s such as on time shipping, and defects.

What technology does nGROUP use?

In addition to third-party technologies we use such as Power BI, HubSpot, and Slack, nGROUP brings internally developed, proprietary tools to the table:

nSite – Management system that supports our internal and external performance reporting as well as incentive pay.

nVision – Video based tools that help us break analyze processes, and create visual management tools.

nTime – Time keeping system that integrates with nSite.

nGROUP University – Training system we that houses multiple internal certification courses including Lean and 6 Sigma. See more here .

How nGROUP Fits With My Business

In an nGROUP operation, who do the people work for?

nGROUP is accountable for the cost, quality and throughput within a designated area within our client’s facilties. As a result, it is necessary that all labor, leadership, supervision, and management within that area be employed by and report to nGROUP. The level of management nGROUP has onsite depends on the scope of the program, which can range from a singular department, to a shift, to an entire facility.

What if I want to exit or it doesn’t work?

You just go back to how we were previously operating. nGROUP will work with you to smoothly transition the workforce and management back to the previous or a new arrangement.

What does it cost?

This varies depending on client specifics but some general rules apply:

nGROUP is paid a fixed cost per unit (CPU) for finished goods produced that is determined through our 3 step process.

The CPU is inclusive of direct and indirect labor involved in the process(s) being managed by nGROUP, to include the costs associated with recruiting, retaining and managing that labor. The primary influences on the CPU are:

Process – Processes that require more handling will have higher CPU.

Volume – Lower volumes will require fixed costs to be spread across less units and yield higher CPU.

Compensation – Higher pay rates and benefit packages, perhaps necessary to retain skilled labor or attract candidates in a competitive market, will result higher CPU.
